Religious Education

Ethos

The Religious Education Department is strongly aligned with encouraging personal development. Students are encouraged to discern their vocation and discover their role in making the world a more equitable place. At the heart of our curriculum is the belief that each person has the responsibility to use their gifts to work towards peace, justice and human dignity:

“Be who God meant you to be, and you will set the world on fire.”

St Catherine of Siena

Curriculum

Trinity Catholic School provides a holistic approach to Religious Education based on the direction of the Catholic Education Service (CES):

Key Stage 3:

Curriculum 10% - 5 hours over 2 weeks.

Assessment – Half termly key words and 2 formal assessment points.

Years 7, 8 and 9 follow the Religious Education Directory as published by the Catholic Education Service. Students are set the homework task at the start of each half term on Class Charts. There is a strong literacy focus in RE and homework will usually be learning spelling and the meanings of the relevant key words. We also highly value investigative skills and so research projects are also set at intervals throughout the year. This boosts their skills in research, critical thinking and analysis, preparing them well for their GCSE course.

Key Stage 4:

Curriculum 10% - 5 hours over 2 weeks.

Assessment – Half termly key words and 2 formal assessment points including mock GCSE papers.

Year 10 and 11 students study the Eduqas full GCSE course in Religious Studies (Specification B). The focus for homework is usually key words however students also consolidate learning using SENECA Learning which is an online platform which follows our GCSE syllabus. Students also use department made resources in the form of a booklet which includes practice exam questions.

Key Stage 5:

Curriculum 5% - 1 hour per week.

Assessment – non-examined project work.

Year 12 and 13 follow a core Religious Education course.

Extra-Curricular

Clubs – Students can take part in a lunchtime Bible Study based on the Gospel of Mark. We also have a Chaplaincy group who help to plan our Masses and care for the Chapel. Our Rosary group meets at 3pm on Fridays in the Chapel to pray and we also offer Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament during some lunchtimes.

Visits – St Peter’s Catholic Church, Baddesley Clinton, Birmingham Central United Synagogue are just a few of the places we visit. We also invite outside speakers into school.

Intervention – Revision sessions for students in years 10 and 11 are offered on a Monday evening after school every other week. This allows us to offer support for skills such as exam technique and an opportunity to recap complex concepts.
